Door Work

Door Work

This weekend I have a few other non-home tasks so I’m unable to go too deep into renovation work. But there’s still plenty to do with the two doors from the bedroom. The closet door has already received a coat of turpentine and boiled linseed oil but the blotching from CitriStrip. I tried using some oxalic acid to bleach the wood but that didn’t work enough. I also sanded the wood and the blotches were still there. I emailed CitriStrip and they responded that I needed to sand more. I tried a few passes with 60 grit ti see if I could get rid of the blotches. While sanding I tried another application of the acid, but still no luck removing the blotches.

The main door to the bedroom isn’t as blotchy because I stopped using CitriStrip but there’s still a few discolorations. I apply the oxalic acid and then wash the wood down with TSP. After that I wash off the TSP with linseed oil soap and then get to sanding.

After I sand things from 60 to 150 grit I start applying turpentine to the wood.

After the turpentine dries, it gives the wood a golden color. I look over for any major discolorations and sand those down again with 150 grit.

After applying turpentine you can see some of the blotchy areas.

After another sanding, I then apply the 50-50 turpentine/BLO mix which gives the wood an even more golden color.
