Finishing up hardware stripping

Finishing up hardware stripping

Last week I did a first pass on the door hardware in the crockpot. I got most of the paint off, but there’s still some paint layers that need a 2nd attempt. The hinges are tricky because they have fine details so the white paint finds its way into all of the nooks and crannies. The rim lock is not as detailed so the white paint came off pretty easily, but there’s also a coat of black paint under the white paint that is now flaking off.

I soak the hardware again in the dish detergent crockpot bath. After a few hours, I go between using plastic and brass wire brushes to remove the last of the paint. After I remove all the paint, I give the metal a coat of WD-40 to prevent rusting.

Same deal with the hinges. I scrape off as much as possible using the plastic brush and then use the brass brush only on the pesky white paint blotches. Back in the bedroom is more paint scraping. I keep attacking the pink latex paint and also get some of the blue calcimine where possible.

The last bit of work is applying some Waterlox to the large built-in doors. This goes OK and I get 2 coats in this weekend. I do notice a few spots on one of the doors that the coloration is not great. I attempt to smooth things out by mixing in some artist oil paint Burnt Umber into the Waterlox to darken things up where needed. The 2 coats are the gloss coats so next weekend will be the matte coat before hanging the doors.
