Lining Paper

Part two of installing lining paper. Before I get going I do another pass of stain on the woodwork and built-in to avoid dealing with stain after the real wallpaper is installed.

After finishing the stain coats I rough cut lining paper sheets to get them ready for installation. I mix up the wheat paste and start installing the sheets around the room. All of these installations are over some obstacles such as junction boxes, windows and doors so each one presents a challenge cutting. I learned my lesson from last time by folding the paper so I can handle it a little better than the entire sheet at once. The lining paper tips I read said to leave a little gap between sheets so I don’t butt things together tightly.

I get a good amount of tears as I’m hanging things and the snap-off utility knife still doesn’t feel sharp enough to cut the paper without snagging. To install the real paper, I’ll definitely need another person to help make sure the cuts are clean.

It’s tough to avoid the tempatation of overworking the paper. When putting the paper down, there’s always some parts that have some creases or lumpiness from wallpaper paste. It’s hard to get these out when wet so I tend to brush too much. I’m finding that as long as I get the air bubbles out, it seems that the lining paper will dry flat even if there are some lumps from the paste.

I get about 90% done with the room and of course I run out of lining paper. When I ordered I added some extra but with having a few failed experiments last week, I ate into my safety budget. I’ll need to order more paper to finish up the rest of the room.
