Decorating the cottage
Being all caught up with work on the cottage, Karen comes down to help with decorating the rooms. I finally got the medicine cabinet so we can hang that along with the rest of the bathroom hardware. I then have a bunch of new decorations I’ve collected over the year for the living room, kitchen and bedrooms.
To start things off, I finish up with rubbing out the rest of the door that I messed up the finish on last weekend. I also give a few more coats of primer to cover up the ripped sheetrock. Luckily Karen doesn’t notice the issue until I point it out to her. The medicine cabinet is 100 year old barnwood so I follow the same pattern as the vanity where I just went with boiled linseed oil and the a linseed oil wax final coat. For this week, I just go with the oil and will let that cure a week before the wax. The oil drastically affects the look of the wood, giving it a darker and richer tone.
After we hang the medicine cabinet, we add the towel racks. Nothing special with these since it’s really hard to find affordable salvaged towel racks so these are one of the few pieces we’ll go with Home Depot for.
I work on installing the door after applying a few coats of shellac to the molding I stained last week. I previously filled the holes with wood glue and dowels to shore up the old wood. I learn my lesson hanging the door that it is easier to attach the hinges to the door first and then to the frame and also to drill the pilot holes for the screws. Also, I’m being a traditonalist using slotted screws, but damn do they suck when applying any torque to them. After much fighting, I eventually get the door up.
The last batch is Karen hanging pictures in the rooms. In the bedroom, since I replastered all of the walls, we hang the frames from the molding as a picture rail. Downstairs the plaster is older so we use screws to secure the frames since there’s no molding there.
